Balochistan: 44 killed, 52 disappeared in August 2024

In August 2024, Balochistan witnessed a disturbing continuation of human rights violations, with 44 reported killings and 52 enforced disappearances. Civilians were targeted through various forms of violence, including kill-and-dump cases, fake encounters, and open firing. Additionally, internet and mobile network shutdowns disrupted communication for several days in different districts, while protests against state brutality were met with repression.

 

Enforced Disappearances:

Perpetrators: The data shows that state security institutions such as the Frontier Corps, Secret Intelligence, Army, and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) are perpetrators of these abductions.

Mode of disappearance: Detentions were the most common mode of disappearance, followed by house raids. Summons to camps were also reported.

Areas of disappearance: The majority of disappearances occurred in the district of Kech, followed by Quetta, Karachi, Kharan, Kalat, Barkhan, Gwadar, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Mastung, Lasbela, and Awaran.

Cases of enforced disappearance:

05 August: Pakistani forces abducted Waleed Hameed, Nazeer Umaid, and Hanif Umaid from Kech district. All were released on 22 August.

06 August: Ghulam Nabi s/o Haji Noor Ahmed Satakzai and Naeem s/o Gulzar Satakzai, both laborers, were forcibly disappeared by state forces from Sariab Road in Quetta.

07 August: Muslim Qadeer and Mahad Baloch were disappeared in Buleida, Kech district. Both were released later—Qadeer on 16 August and Baloch on 20 August.

On the same day: Nasram s/o Peer Baksh, previously abducted in October 2023, disappeared again by Pakistani forces in Buleida, Kech.

11 August: Zakir Ali and Faqir were abducted by Pakistani forces and secret agents of security services from Askani area, Turbat, Kech.

On the same day: A youth named Sadakat s/o Allah Baksh disappeared by Pakistani forces from Passini, Gwadar.

Two students, Brahamdag s/o Muhammad Ibrahim and Telah s/o Javed Iqbal were disappeared in Khuzdar. Both were released later, on 03 September.

12 August: Amanullah s/o Eid Muhammad was disappeared by Pakistani forces in Uthal.

13 August: Naseebullah, a resident of Awaran, was forcibly disappeared by Pakistani secret intelligence from Raees Goth in Karachi.

On the same day: Shabir Ahmed and Hafeez Ahmed were disappeared in Khuzdar and later released on 03 September.

14 August: Akram s/o Dad Muhammad was disappeared in Panwan, Gwadar.

On the same day: a singer, Riaz Ahmed Baloch, a resident of Jinnah Town Killi Shaho, Quetta, forcibly disappeared by forces.

14 August: Family of two brothers, Khuda Rahm Mari and Khudai Dost Mari reported that Khuda Rahm was abducted and disappeared in April 2024, while Khudai Dost was abducted and disappeared in May.

15 August: Two young men, Lakmir and Khudadad were disappeared by Pakistani forces in Kharan. Their relatives continue protests in the Red Zone.

On the same day: A youth named Qambar s/o Umeed Khan was disappeared in Turbat. He was previously disappeared by forces in October 2022 and released after a week.

Banda Khan was disappeared by Pakistani forces from Satellite Town in Quetta, and Khan Muhammad was forcibly disappeared from Jhao Kohdo, Awaran.

16 August: Irshad Ahmed, a student from Mastung, was disappeared by unknown armed men from his home.

17 August: Shehzad s/o Mehbob Malazi disappeared from Kharan.

18 August: Sarfraz Ahmed s/o Zahoor Ahmed Lango, an 18-year-old resident of Mangochar, Kalat, was disappeared by forces from Johan Cross, Mangochar.

20 August: Four individuals were disappeared by Pakistani forces in the Abdui border area, two of whom were identified as Asumi s/o Abdullah, resident of Loup Balgathar, and Yar Muhammad s/o Kamalan, resident of Balgathar.

21 August: Family of Shahnawaz Sarparrah reported that he was abducted and disappeared along with another person, Abdul Ghani on 04 April 2024 from Mangochar. Abdul Ghani was later released while Shahnawaz remains disappeared.

23 August: Noomi Baloch, a young content creator, disappeared by forces from Quetta.

24 August: Deen Muhammad Marri s/o Murad Khan was disappeared by forces from his home in Quetta and later released on 05 September.

25 August: Allah Nazar s/o Khuda Nazar was abducted by armed men from Panjgur and was released on 29 August.

26 August: A poet, Nadeem Beewas, with psychiatric issues, was disappeared in Kech and later released on 03 September.

27 August: Karachi police, along with intelligence officials, disappeared Hasnain s/o Khalid, resident of Baloch Abad Mand, Kech, and Rahman s/o Aslam, resident of Pishin.

28 August: Javed s/o Abdul Wahid, a laborer, was forcibly disappeared from Turbat, Kech district.

On the same day: Journalist Hayat Khan Khetran was detained by Pakistani forces and was released the next day.

Asif Jan Baloch and Hayat Shah, senior members of the Barkhan Youth Union, were summoned to a camp and disappeared and released the next day.

Naseebulla s/o Haji Ahmed, a resident of Kharan, was disappeared by CTD from in Gwadar but was later released.

Two brothers, Bakhtiar and Kamran, sons of Muhammad Ghaus Yalanzai, were disappeared by forces from Kharan and later released on 30 August.

30 August: Nusrat s/o Hussain and Dad Dost s/o Hasil were disappeared from Konshkalat Tump and were later released on 01 September.

31 August: Two individuals, Shahswar s/o Hussain, and Murtaza s/o Ali, were disappeared in Panjgur but were released the next day.

31 August: Family of Khair Deen son of Azizullah, reported that he was arrested and forcibly disappeared from his home by CTD officials at 3:00 am on the night of July 12, 2024. He remains missing to this day.

 

Killings

Mode of Killings: Most of the killings were target killings, followed by kill-and-dump cases, fake encounters, incidents of open firing, and others.

Preparators: The main perpetrators involved in the killings include Frontier Corps (FC), Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and some unknown individuals.

Killed People:

02 August: Hamdan Badini was shot dead when Frontier Corps FC) personnel opened fire on a protest in Nushki.

04 August: Sabir Baloch s/o Dad Shah, a resident of Awaran, was shot dead in Sarawan, Iran, by unknown assailants.

05 August: A 10-year-old boy, Qudratullah, was killed by a hand grenade thrown into a home in Kharan by Frontier Corps (FC).

08 August: Abbas, alias Lakko s/o Badu, a resident of Jhaoo, was shot dead by BLF militants in Jhao, accusing him of being a collaborator with Pakistani forces.

11 August: Sitara, daughter of Basheer Ahmed, a 5-year-old girl, was killed in shelling by the Pakistani Army in Kolwah, Kech district.

12 August: Deputy Commissioner Panjgur, Zakir Baloch, was killed in an armed attack in Mastung.

13 August: A school teacher and member of the Baloch National Movement, Abdul Khaliq s/o Dost Muhammad, was shot dead by Pakistani forces in the Malaar area of Awaran.

14 August: Rashid s/o Dadullah, was killed by unknown armed men in Baloch Abad, Mand, Kech.

15 August: Rahim Jan s/o Anwar, a young student, was shot dead by unknown armed men in Buleda Sahib Khan Bazar.

On the same day: Naseer Ahmed s/o Pir Muhammad, was shot dead by BLF militants in Singanisar, Turbat, accusing him of being a collaborator with Intelligence Services.

16 August: Imtiaz s/o Iqbal, who had been forcibly disappeared on 18 May 2024 and was released on 8 June 2024, was shot dead by unknown armed men in Aapsar, Turbat.

On the same day: five dead bodies were found tied to an electric pole in Dalbandin, Chagai. The victims were identified as Rozi Muhammad, Rahmatullah, Samiullah, Agha Wali, and Sardar Wali, all residents of Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan.

19 August: A dead body was found near Safe Town in the Sariab Customs area of Quetta, identified as Jummah.

On the same day:  Militants Nasrullah, Muhammad Asif Nichari, and Muhammad Bakhsh Sumalani were killed during a clash with Pakistani forces in Mastung. All were affiliated with militant organizations Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) and Baloch Liberation Army (BLA).

20 August: Baloch Liberation Army (Azad) militants Hafiz Mumtaz and Zahid Jan were killed in a clash with Pakistani forces in Chitkan, Panjgur.

23 August: The decapitated body of 15-year-old Isa Khan was found near Komani Khuwa, Shirani. The motive behind the incident remains unknown.

On the same day:  Muhibullah s/o Sardarzada Munir, was killed in an inter-tribal clash of the Mustani tribe over land in Zehri, Khuzdar.

24 August: Two children were killed and 12 others, including five policemen, were injured in a bomb blast near the Police Line in Pishin.

On the same day: Abdul Waheed, a resident of Sindh, was shot dead by BLA militants, who accused him of being affiliated with the Pakistani Army.

26 August: Hakeem s/o Ali Murad, was abducted by local death squads and later found dead in Gardank, Buleda, Kech.

27 August: Four dead bodies were found in the Bhatti area of Quetta. One of the victims was identified as 22-year-old Jawad Ali s/o Mohammad Gul, a resident of Usta Mohammad.

On the same day: Three unidentified dead bodies were found in the Manju Shuri area of Naseerabad.

Also, on the same day, two young men, Sajjad Baloch and Kamran Baloch, were summoned to an FC camp in Panjgur and later killed by FC personnel.

28 August: Akhtar Baloch s/o Muhammad, a resident of Gomazi, Tump in Kech district, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in the Dashtiyari area of Iran.

29 August: Five dead bodies were found in various locations in Khuzdar district. The victims were identified as Fayyaz Jatak, Saeed Gholmani, Saeed Meeraji, and Nisar Ahmed. All had been forcibly disappeared by the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD).

31 August: A person was killed in Harani by his cousin due to a personal grudge.

Others:

25 August: BLA conducted a large-scale attack against armed forces, allegedly killing over a hundred forces personnel across multiple locations in Balochistan. In one particularly event, 23 individuals from the Musa Khel district of Punjab were executed after being offloaded from buses and identified. The BLA claimed the victims were undercover intelligence operatives and military forces. In response, Pakistani security forces reported the killing of 21 militants during retaliatory operations.

30 August: Zubaida, a woman, was injured by open firing from the FC in Riko Buleda, sustaining gunshot wounds.
