Balochistan: 26 forcibly disappeared, 11 killed in March

In March 2024, at least 26 individuals from various parts of Balochistan were reportedly abducted by Pakistani security forces and intelligence agencies. These disappearances occurred during house raids, detentions, and while the individuals were traveling. Moreover, there were at least 11 killings reported across the province, including those of a female polling agent, a political leader, and civilians.

Enforced disappearances

March 04th: The Frontier Corps (FC) detained Riaz Ahmad, son of Fateh Muhammad, from Quetta’s Jinnah Town IT University Street and disappeared him.

March 05: Gul Zaman Kurd abducted after being detained by FC in Mach Bolan. His brother, Sher Zaman Kurd, disappeared in February 2011 by security forces and was later found dead.

March 06: Security forces conducted a search operation in the Zehri Nurgama area of Khuzdar, raided the residence of Bilal Ahmad, son of Ustad Muhammad Bakhsh Miraji, and forcibly disappeared him. Reports claim physical assaults against residents and property damage during the raid.

March 08: Pakistani intelligence abducted medical student Khuda Dad Baloch from Sarghoda, Punjab. He was eventually released on March 29th.

Similarly, intelligence officials in Dera Ghazi Khan abducted Shehzad Baloch, a young student from Barkhan.

March 09: Shoaib Buzdar son of Khan Mohammad, a resident of Taunsa Shareef and a medical student at Bolan Medical College in Quetta, was forcibly whisked away by the secret agencies from near his home.

The same day, Bibigar Basham and his cousin Ijaz Baloch were detained during a raid in Gwadar and shifted to unknown location. Bibagar Basham is the brother of Abubakar Baloch, Junior Joint Secretary of BSO Pajjar.

March 10: The disappearance of a young man named Akhtar, son of Shamsullah, was reported. He was initially abducted on February 2nd from the Killi Gourabad area of Mastung. However, for unknown reasons, the news was made public late.

March 11: Abdul Raziq Baloch, who went missing from Surab by the CTD, was released the next day after a strong reaction from his family.

March 12: Asif Shahwani, a resident of Quetta, was detained by FC in the Kechi Beg area. His whereabouts are unknown.

March 16: The FC personnel detained Shoaib Ahmad son of Bahram and Balach son of Durra, two young men, from Askani Bazar area of Apsar. They haven’t been seen since.

March 19: Pakistani forces subjected Saddam Hussain, a resident of Mastung, to enforced disappearance near Chaltan Pump area of Mustang.

March 21: Forces forcibly disappeared Abdul Hakeem, after detaining him from Khuzdar’s Ghazgi area.

Separately, Ehsan Ullah was abducted by intelligence agents in Khuzar district. He was later released on March 24.

March 22: Forces raided Jhao area of Awaran district, and disappeared Zafar. Reports indicate threats and assaults on civilians during the raid.

March 23: Tahir, a local dispenser, was summoned by FC to a military camp in Jhao and hasn’t been seen since.

March 24: Pakistani forces detained two brothers, Mir Khan and Hussain Khan from Zehri while accompanying a patient to the hospital and disappeared them.

Another person, Ameer Hamza, was abducted from Mustang. His wife reported torture, vandalism, and confiscation of valuables from their home during the raid.

The same day, Pashtun Tahafuz Movement leaders Naqeeb Pashtun and Asmat Comrade were abducted from Quetta by unidentified people and there is no information regarding their whereabouts.

March 26: Ghulamullah Lehri was arrested by CTD officials from his home in Mastung and taken to an undisclosed location.

March 28: Sindh Rangers forcibly disappeared Khan Muhammad, a student, from Malir, Karachi. He was later released after two days.

March 30: Behroz Dilawari, a teacher, was forcefully taken away from his home by the forces and intelligence agencies. He was later released.

Killings

March 01: A female polling agent was shot dead by gunfire at a polling station in Ziarat during a re-polling session. Three people, including a girl, were also injured.

March 04: Haji Ramzan, Vice President of the Balochistan Shia Conference, was fatally shot outside his residence in Quetta’s Hazara Town area.

March 09: Asif, son of Bibagar, was shot dead by unknown gunmen in Kech district.

March 09: Qasim, son of Hamid, was shot dead by unknown armed men in Panjgur.

March 09: Muhammad Hanif, a truck driver transporting precious stones, died after being shot by unknown gunmen on the Karachi highway.

March 10: Ali Hasan Muhammad Hasni was shot and killed by armed men who entered a house in Khuzdar.

March 11: Balach, son of Bashir, was shot dead by gunmen in the Kech district. The Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) claimed responsibility, alleging Balach was a former member who switched sides to work for Pakistani intelligence.

March 12: Muhammad Akram, also known Babar Aziz, a resident of Killi Ghamgazar area of Kalat, was shot dead by unknown persons.

March 27: Shoaib and Zaman, who had previously disappeared from Lyari area of Karachi in August 2023, were extrajudicially killed in custody by Pakistani forces and their bodies were discarded.

March 31: Sharif, son of Abdul Wahid, was shot dead by gunmen in Kech district.

Human Rights Council of Balochistan (Hakkpaan) is a non-profit and non-partisan human rights group based in Balochistan and Sweden. It collects reports from Balochistan, a region Pakistan government does not allow any media and HR group to visit and report. Human rights violations in Balochistan is not a new phenomenon, but it got its worst levels after the Military coup de tat of Pakistan in 1999. Thousands of Baloch have been reported missing, hundreds killed in fake encounters and so-called kill and dump policy of the military.
